Susan Gingrasso, Professor Emeritus University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Theatre & Dance Department, Language of Dance ® Center Executive Director; Master Teacher Trainer, Certified Movement Analyst

Susan Gingrasso, a visionary in her field, champions a student-centered dance education that places dance literacy, artistry, collaboration, and leadership at the core of teaching and learning in and through dance. In recognition of her extensive contributions to the field, the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO)
honored Susan with its Dance Educator of the Year Award in 2006 and its highest honor, the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025.

Building a nationally recognized dance major
With a master’s degree in dance from UCLA, Susan began her 32-year career at the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point (UWSP) in 1974. Susan led the creation of our dance major—a program she guided to national prominence. Her leadership emphasized developing and nurturing collaborative relationships, ethical decision making, and interdisciplinary relationships. She expanded opportunities for students to develop their creativity, artistry, leadership, and ability to communicate through and about dance.

Contributing nationally and in Wisconsin
Susan has held key positions in NDEO, including Director of Resources Review, co-chair of the Applied
Strategic Plan, and Nominations Committee. As the Associate Editor for the Dance Education in Practice
journal, she authored the "Practical Resources for Dance Educators" column. She continues to mentor emerging and established authors within the dance education community. Her support continues to encourage dance educators to contribute to our field’s body of knowledge. Her contributions to the Wisconsin Curriculum Guidelines in Dance K-12 in 1983, the first in the nation and her role in co-chairing, with a UWSP graduate, the revision of Wisconsin’s Dance Standards in 2019 have shaped dance education in the state and nationally.

Leading the Language of Dance Center
As Associate then Executive Director of the Language of Dance Center (LODC) from 2006-2027, Susan has
been a driving force in expanding the Center and its work. Under her leadership, the LODC has developed
online courses, built new partnerships, and created professional development opportunities in Language of
Dance for educators across the country. Susan’s work builds on the work of Ann Hutchinson Guest, the founder of the Language of Dance, whose vision she has continued to advance. Her efforts in integrating the Movement Alphabet into teaching have empowered countless educators and students to transform their understanding of themselves as artists and people.

Susan Gingrasso’s legacy centers on visionary and ethical leadership that values positive, collaborative learning environments rooted in movement theory and application. Susan champions joyful, thoughtful, and creative teaching and learning in and through dance. Whether through her role at the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point, her contributions to the NDEO, or her leadership at the LODC, Susan’s influence on dance education is profound and far-reaching, embodying a career dedicated to the transformative power of dance.
